On a nature scavenger hunt with 2nd graders on the bird trail in the woods in mid-September, we discovered this White-Marked Tussock Moth larva caught in a spider web that was in a felled tree. It was a great opportunity to talk about the roles of trees even after they've died, and the forms of life supported by these decomposing trees. We also saw evidence of insects boring into the tree, but this was the only photo I took (2nd graders need to keep moving!).
